The Holsteiner Verband
THE AMERICAN HOLSTEINER HORSE ASSOCIATION

Updated Bylaws 1-12-12.pdf
Founded in 1978, the American Holsteiner Horse Association was established to assist breeders in producing quality horses with Holsteiner bloodlines. In North America, the American Holsteiner Horse Association is dedicated to carrying out the breeding practices of the German Holsteiner Verband. The AHHA functions as an independent non-profit organization while maintaining an informal working relationship with the Verband. The Association conducts annual breeding stock inspections and only those horses which are of sufficient quality are eligible to produce registered offspring.
Additionally, the AHHA maintains a public registry of Holsteiner Horses and brands qualified stallions, mares and foals with the Association's brand. The AHHA disseminates breeding data and association information through the publication of an annual Breeder's Guide, through publication of The Holsteiner magazine, through periodic AHHA Newsletters, and this website. The AHHA also maintains an Award Program which recognizes the accomplishments of Holsteiner horses, honoring them at an annual awards dinner held in conjunction with the Association's annual meeting.
The Holsteiner Horse originated in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Northern Germany and is the product of a systematic breeding program that orignated over 700 years ago. The modern Holsteiner is of medium frame and stands 16 to 17 hands, with a powerful hind leg, strong back and loin. His arched neck rises from a well-angled shoulder to a small head with a large, intelligent eye. This conformation adapts itself easily to "self-carriage" -- that expressive, elegant quality so essential in modern equestrian sport. When the Holsteiner Horse begins to move, his reputation as one of the world's finest sporthorses is understood.
The German Holsteiner studbook is one of the smallest studbooks in Europe with approximately 6% of the total equine population. However, it has consistently produced some of the world's most successful international horses in a range of disciplines. At the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Holsteiners dominated the proceedings. In Dressage, Granat won the individual Gold Medal and Madrigal won the Silver. Albrant won the Silver Medal in Three Day Eventing, and Trophy earned a Silver in Show Jumping. The same year, Emil Jung won the World Championships in Combined Driving with a team of four Holsteiners.
That high performance quality has carried on into the present era. Calvaro V, an 18-hand grey gelding, won the individual silver medal in show jumping at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, and was voted Best Horse at the 1998 World Equestrian Games. Despite her Hanoverian brand, Olympic Gold Medalist Ratina Z is by the Holsteiner stallion Ramiro and her second dam is a Holsteiner mare. Ratina Z won the prestigious Grand Prix of Aachen. In 1999, Landlady, an American bred mare, was short listed for the USET Three Day Eventing team for the Pan American Games.
In North America, most of the top show jumping riders have had at least one Holsteiner in their string, including Anne Kursinski (Indeed & Canyon), Margie Goldstein Engle (Hidden Creek Alvaretto, Hidden Creek Christo), Hap Hansen (Roxett 7), Tim Grubb (Elan Coriana, Elan Lorestan), Susie Hutchison (America I), Nona Garson (Capital S), Leslie Howard (Concerto), and Richard Spooner (Ace).
Holsteiner stallions continue to produce some of America's top dressage horses, including Lifetime, USDF Horse of the Year at Second Level. In the Adult Amateur divisions, where good temperament is of the utmost importance, both Contango, USDF Horse of the Year at Grand Prix, and Jagger, USDF Horse of the Year at Fourth Level, are by Holsteiner stallions.
Association Board Members and Breeding Committee members are elected by the membership.

CORRALEJO DEL RIO
(Cathalido x Lacoste x Rantares)
CHAMP 163
(Chamonix x Coronado x Ligorett)
In order for a horse to be eligible to be registered with the AHHA, it must be sired by an AHHA approved stallion that has been activated by the stallion's owner in the breeding year and out of by an AHHA approved mare that has also been activated in the breeding year. The first step in registering your horse with the AHHA is to complete the AHHA Registration Application, which is available from this website's Horse Forms page. While a Breeding Certificate from the stallion owner is no longer required to register with the AHHA, the foal must be DNA-tested for parent verification, a procedure that will be required during the registration process. A complete set of photos must also be included with the Registration Application, and specific directions for taking these can be found with the form download.
Certificate of Pedigrees are available for certain Holsteiner horses that are not eligible for full registration. In order to qualify for a Certificate of Pedigree, the horse must be sired by an AHHA Approved stallion that has been activated by the stallion's owner in the breeding year, or out of by an AHHA Approved mare that has been activated in the breeding year.
To view a full list of breeding rules, please click on the Breeding Rules button above.
Questions may be directed to the AHHA office.
Please visit any of our breeder's websites. Click on your selection to be directed to a website or email response form. To join this list, please contact the AHHA for a Breeder's Directory Application Form.

MARE PERFORMANCE IN SPORT REQUIREMENTS.pdf
AHHA Approvals are held in the late summer and early fall months of each year at sites across the United States and Canada. Our team of qualified judges, including representatives from the German Holsteiner Verband Commission, visits each site with the goal of evaluating and approving mares and stallions for the breeding books, and to get an overview of the progress of our breeders through foal crop production. These events are always an educational venue for everyone involved and offer not only insight into the breed but opportunities for networking with other local breeders in your area.
Pre-entry of horses into an approvals event is required, and entry forms for each year's tour are posted to this website in the early summer months. All mares age two and older holding AHHA registration papers or AHHA certificates of pedigree or Jockey Club papers are eligible for studbook entry. Mares from all other WBFSH-member organizations may also be eligible, as are warmblood mares from other registries which can meet pedigree requirements. If you are unsure of your mare's eligibility, it is suggested that you contact our office with your inquiry.
Stallions presented for breeding must also meet AHHA age and pedigree requirements or hold an extraordinary sport record for consideration for approval. Please contact the AHHA office to learn more.
In 2007, the AHHA Board of Directors agreed to the guidelines mandated by the German Holsteiner Verband with regard to efforts in maintaining the Holsteiner horse as a pure breed. To read this accord, "The Holsteiner Konzept", please click here .

2011 Cumulative Tour Results.pdf
The 2011 Approvals Tour is now complete. Our judges, Arlene Rigdon and Michael Gonell, reported superb impressions of the Holsteiners on the tour, with a very high percentage of premium mares compared to previous years. Several new stallions have been entered into the studbook, and, as usual, the quality of the 2011 foal crop was consistently high. As always we extend our great appreciation to the many site hosts who organized for our presence, and applaud the breeders for their efforts and attendance. The Tour is an important part of the AHHA's purpose, to educate and guide breeders as they improve and promote the Holsteiner breed in America.
