Selection of Breeding Stock...

The quality of Holsteiner breeding stock is ensured through the annual Breeding Stock Inspections or 'Keurings'. Horses are evaluated and graded according to quality and to their potential for adding to the breeding pool.

All adult horses (Mares and Stallions) will be judged by an official Inspection Team. Presentation in hand will be standing, at the walk and at the trot; all gaits will be observed at liberty. Horses will be graded on a scale from 1 to 10 for the following:

Note: Starting in 1999 our bonits represent the following marks (please see this link: Important Info: DNA Typing and New 1999 Bonit System

  1. Type
  2. Topline
  3. Front Legs
  4. Hind Legs
  5. Walk
  6. Trot
  7. Canter

Note: Horses Approved prior to 1999 have bonits that correspond to the following:

  1. Type
  2. Topline
  3. Depth of Body
  4. Front Legs
  5. Hind Legs
  6. Correctness of Gaits
  7. Brilliance and Impulsion

Mares are inspected one time during a keuring, and if of sufficient quality, are entered into one of three studbooks.

Stallion Requirements

Stallions are inspected twice during the keuring. They are shown in hand and at liberty, and in a free jumping exercise. Starting in 1996, Stallions are also expected to perform an under saddle 'dressage' test and 'jumping' test.

For Stallions, inspection prior to entry into the studbook is only the first step before becoming a fully approved stallion. The stallion is expected to demonstrate his athleticism either through a recognized 100 day test or through sport. His offspring are also inspected for quality and genetic defects. Only then is he granted a life-time breeding license.

Mare Performance Test

What is the Mare Performance Test?

The Mare Performance Test evaluates rideability, gaits and jumping ability under saddle. In the flat work, the mare must show ability to lengthen in the trot, freedom and regularity of gaits, impulsion, balance and willingness. For jumping under saddle, the mare will be scored on technique, scope and willingness. Mares will not be unduly penalized for "green" mistakes.

What mares are eligible for the Mare Performance Test?

Is the Mare Performance Test offered at all approval sites?

No, the Mare Performance Test is only offered at certain sites, based on the response to the Mare Performance Pre-Entry questionnaire that goes out earlier in the year. Check the schedule to see which sites will be holding the Mare Performance Test.

What is the fee for the Mare Performance Test?

The fee is $50 for those mares already in the Main Mare Premium Book. All others are $100.

Can I see the actual test information before the test?

Yes. This information can be obtained by contacting the AHHA Central Office.

Mares that passed the 1999 Mare Test

The following mares passed the Mare Performance Test:

Inspection of Yearlings and Foals

Foals and Yearlings are presented at the Keurings for inspection, and optionally, for branding.. Foals are given two marks from 1-10 for conformation and gaits. They can receive awards of Merit or Premium if judged to be of sufficient quality. (note foal bonits did not change)

The 1998 winner of the $250 certificate was: Anna Wintz of Creede Colorado

Premium foals and yearlings will continue to receive a $100.00 cash award. IN ADDITION, for the first foal to receive a score of 9 & 9, there will be a substantial cash award. For every year not awarded, the fund will grow!
