Selection of Breeding Stock...

The quality of Holsteiner breeding stock is ensured through the annual Breeding Stock Inspections or 'Keurings'. Horses are evaluated and graded according to quality and to their potential for adding to the breeding pool.

All adult horses (Mares and Stallions) will be judged by an official Inspection Team. Presentation in hand will be standing, at the walk and at the trot; all gaits will be observed at liberty. Horses will be graded on a scale from 1 to 10 for the following:

  1. Type
  2. Topline
  3. Depth of Body
  4. Front Legs
  5. Hind Legs
  6. Correctness of Gaits
  7. Brilliance and Impulsion

Mares are inspected one time during a keuring, and if of sufficient quality, are entered into one of three studbooks.

Stallion Requirements

Stallions are inspected twice during the keuring. They are shown in hand and at liberty, and in a free jumping exercise. Starting in 1996, Stallions are also expected to perform an under saddle 'dressage' test and 'jumping' test.

For Stallions, inspection prior to entry into the studbook is only the first step before becoming a fully approved stallion. The stallion is expected to demonstrate his athleticism either through a recognized 100 day test or through sport. His offspring are also inspected for quality and genetic defects. Only then is he granted a life-time breeding license.

There were four new stallions approved this year. Please click here to see the photos of the stallions and a press release related to their approval.

Inspection of Yearlings and Foals

Foals and Yearlings are presented at the Keurings for inspection, and optionally, for branding.. Foals are given two marks from 1-10 for conformation and gaits. They can receive awards of Merit or Premium if judged to be of sufficient quality.

In 1997 there were Five Premium Foals with the bonits of 8,8. They are:

There were 11 additional Premium Holsteiner Foals and 2 Premium Certificate of Pedigree foals. Please see those sections for the details.

The 1997 Annual AHHA Breeding Stock approval tour held September 6 - 18

The 1997 Inspection Committee consisted of Arlene Rigdon, Jos Sevriens, and Doris van Heeckeren. For the stallion site, the judging committee was augmented by Heinz-Hermann Magens and Jens Hauschildt, from the Holsteiner Verband. Both judges are Holsteiner breeders and have produced stallions in Germany. In fact, Mr. Magens is the breeder of Fabio I, who was licensed both in Germany and Belgium before his importation to the U.S.

Travelling with the Committee were Maggie Sjoberg, Chairman of the Breeding and Registration Committee and Patricia Donohue, AHHA Registrar.
